Magic and everyday life. Andalusia, 16th-18th century

Rafael Martín Soto

The Andalusian Studies Centre and the Publishing House Renacimiento present this unique work which offers an exhaustive study of magical mentality and practice from the 16th through to the 18th century

This book contains a study of magical mentality and practice in the Modern Era in Andalusia (16th-18th century) with entertaining descriptions of real figures of the time, the sorcerors themselves and those who sought their services. The author’s intention is to reveal how the resource of magic became an everyday practice for the solution of a whole range of problems, in a pluralistic society from a sociological, cultural, ethnic and religious standpoint.   The results of this study may be similar for any region of Spain or Mediterranean Europe, with the exception of certain spells and numbers invoked.

The Doctor in History, Rafael Martín Soto, has previously addressed this topic with great objectivity and historic rigour. His doctoral thesis, published with the title ‘Magic and the Inquisition in the Former Kingdom of Granada’, was also related with this theme.
