José Venegas. Adventures and Memories of Spain

Eugenio Pérez Alcalá

This work is published for the first time in Spain by theAndalusian Studies Centre and publishing house Renacimiento, as part of its Biblioteca del Exilio (Library of Exile) collection and features an introduction by Professor Eugenio Pérez Alcalá, the foremost specialist on José Venegas. Journalist and writer José Venegas was one of the most significant exponents of the "Other Generation of 1927", a lesser known offshoot of Spain's famous literary group the Generation of 1927. Its literary work had a decidedly Republican ideological slant.

Andanzas y Recuerdos
de España

José Venegas (Linares, 1896 - Buenos Aires, 1948) played a key role in the promotion of culture and Republican ideas both in Spain and Latin America. His life was essentially dedicated to journalism and publishing. It is perhaps this dual condition that has kept him outside most of the studies on early 20th-century Spanish literature to the extent that his life and publishing work were all but unknown. His work "Adventures and Memories of Spain", valuable for gaining an insight into the Spain between 1920 and 1936, was published in Argentina and financed by the author himself in 1943. Until now it was unknown in Spain.

The Andalusian Studies Centre and the publishing house Renacimiento are now salvaging this book in which Venegas recounts the events which he had first hand experience of and which he considers to have social and historical value. Because of this, rather than a book about memories or a traditional autobiography, it becomes a mosaic of Spain during the dictatorship and the Republic.
