Newspapers during the War of Independence (1808-1814)
Manuel Gómez Ímaz
This work was published on the occasion of the first centenary of the War of Independence and, to mark the second, the Andalusian Studies Centre and Renacimiento have released a copy of this text with a prologue by Manuel Moreno Alonso. A unique insight into the version offered by the press of one of the more convulsive periods of Spanish History.
THE BOOK:
First published on the First Centenary of the Spanish War of Independence in 1908, the book ‘Newspapers during the War of Independence (1808-1814)’ has now been reissued to mark the 2nd Centenary of the War. Manuel Gómez Ímaz of Seville assumed this important work motivated by "an extraordinary understanding of the period, and a passion for collection of newspapers and news reports of those truly extraordinary years”. Its pages offer an exhaustive inventory of all the Spanish newspapers of a period which saw the emergence of numerous administrative centres, as well as extracts and references of articles which the author considered of interest to Spanish history. This study is of such high quality, earning the National Library Prize in 1908, that in the opinion of Manuel Moreno Alonso, Lecturer of Seville University and author of the prologue to this edition, it continues to be "one of the most emblematic contributions to the history of the Spanish press, with total relevance today".
THE AUTHOR: Manuel Gómez Ímaz
Manuel Gómez Ímaz (Havana 1842 - Seville 1922) was, above all, a scholar of his period, related with the group of friends associated with Menéndez Pelayo, the most prestigious circles of bibliophiles and “enlightened gentlemen”, and a participant in important discussion groups such as the group of the Marquis of Jerez de los Caballeros. His obsession with this period in history and his interest in collecting newspapers and news from the period led to the creation of this monumental project of historical journalism. Although The Newspapers of the War of Independence (1808-1814) was his masterpiece, it was by no means his only work. He also carried out an Inventory of the paintings taken by the French in Seville in 1810, and wrote ‘Artículos. Fruslerías Históricas Sevillanas’. He ended his days as Chairman of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the Royal Academy of Humanities of Seville.
